The Declan Rourke Novels
Great Lakes Noir, where history is never dead and secrets still collect interest
On a summer night along Lake Erie, a body is found on a legendary pier once known for music, moonlight, and dancing.
The suspect is convenient.
And convenient is usually a lie.
What begins as a single death opens a door into a history some towns would rather keep nostalgic than true. In Luna Pier, the past is not something people talk about. It is something they protect.
Author’s Note
“I grew up in Luna Pier, Michigan, more specifically in Allen’s Cove, a quiet stretch of shoreline that always felt like it held more stories than people.
As a kid, I walked the waterfront searching for remnants of what came before. It was never hard to imagine shadows moving between cottages, or the lake carrying secrets just beyond the breakwater. Even then, the place felt weighted, as if history had settled into the land and refused to fully let go.
This novel is fiction. But the bones of it are real. The wind off Lake Erie. The fog before dawn. The way certain houses seem to watch you as you pass. Those details are lived, not invented.
In creating Declan Rourke, I wanted a character who could stand toe to toe with this town. Someone running from the past but grounded in instinct. Someone sharp enough to navigate danger, and quiet enough to hear when the town starts talking.”
A World Built on Beauty and Silence
The Great Lakes shoreline is famous for sunsets, summer cottages, and music that once drifted across the water. But every idyllic town has places it does not advertise, names it does not say out loud, and histories it prefers to remember selectively.
The Declan Rourke Novels are crime and noir stories set along Lake Erie and the Great Lakes corridor, where cold cases are not just unsolved. They are protected.
Each book takes Rourke into a different waterfront community shaped by legacy power, old money, and buried Prohibition-era infrastructure that never fully disappeared. These are mysteries driven by atmosphere, moral tension, and desire shaped by secrecy and risk.
They are stories about what communities build, what they bury, and what happens when someone finally digs.
Who Is Declan Rourke
Declan Rourke is a former bootlegger who survived his way into a second life.
He is pragmatic, observant, and fluent in both respectable rooms and backroom deals. He does not chase truth for recognition. He hunts it because he knows what happens when the wrong people control the narrative.
Rourke understands legacy crime. He understands how influence passes quietly from generation to generation, how founding families become untouchable, and how violence is often disguised as misfortune. He has lived too close to the underworld to romanticize it, and too close to justice to believe it always wins without a fight.
What to Expect from the Series
Each novel delivers:
• A vivid Great Lakes setting where beauty and danger share the same shoreline
• A present-day crime rooted in buried history, often reaching back to Prohibition
• Power structures that are social, financial, and personal, not just criminal
• A slow-burn undercurrent of seduction, where intimacy is complicated by secrets
• A larger, evolving conspiracy that becomes clearer with every book
This is noir with heart and teeth, driven by memory, community, and the cost of silence.
Book One
Murder on the Moon Pier
A body turns up on a legendary Lake Erie pier during a summer night of music and dancing. The official explanation arrives quickly. Too quickly.
As Rourke follows the trail through Toledo Beach, the trolley line, and the guarded quiet of Allen’s Cove, he uncovers a hidden archive of Prohibition-era records and a living network that never truly dissolved.
The deeper he digs, the clearer it becomes that the past in Luna Pier is not a story people tell. It is an engine people still feed.
In a town built on moonlight and memory, the truth carries a price.
A Note on Place and Memory
This series is powered by a real love for Great Lakes communities. Their resilience. Their beauty. Their neighborliness. Their history.
It also refuses to pretend that history is only wholesome.
The Great Lakes were routes, borders, and opportunity. They were also corridors for corruption, exploitation, and silence. If you have ever loved a place enough to tell the truth about it, you are in the right series.
